Hands only CPR is an effective method for providing care for the victims of sudden cardiact arrest and can double the chance of victim survival. There are two steps- (1) Call 9-1-1 and (2) Push hard and fast (about 100 times a minute) in the center of the chest. The American Heart Association reports that only 41 percent of people that experiece cardiac arrest recieve the help they need prior to the arrival of emergency assistance. Hands-Only CPR can save lives.

Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over 600,000 Americans die of heart disease each year. The most common form is known as coronary artery disease, and is caused by the formation of "plaque" within the blood vessels. Preventable risk factors include smoking, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle. The buildup of plaque within the blood vessels reduces blood flow to the heart. The symptoms of heart disease vary, however chest discomfort or a heart attack is one of the first signs.

The signs of heart attack may include:

  • Weakness
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Nausea
  • Pain or discomfort in the shoulder or arms
  • Pain or discomfort in the chest, neck or jaw
  • Cold sweat

It is highly recommeded that you call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you know are having these symptoms.
