Deputy B. Gieger and Deputy J. Andrews were on routine patrol on the night of January 13, 2013 when a call was dispatched regarding a Fight in Progress on Weigh Station Road. Both deputies responded and arrived within three minutes of the dispatch. The deputies found one subject lying on the ground covered in blood suffering from a gunshot wound. The suspect was also located near the victim. The deputies immediately secured the suspect, called for EMS, and began securing the scene.,
Soon after, EMS personnel notified Deputy Gieger that the victim was deceased. Deputy Andrews kept the suspect secure in his vehicle and Deputy Gieger continued with his efforts to secure the scene. Deputy Gieger and Deputy Andrews also had to contend with a growing number of family and friends of both the victim and the suspect who were arriving at the scene. Deputy Gieger and Deputy Andrews maintained an atmosphere of calm that assisted in keeping the situation under control until back up could arrive.
Deputy Andrews maintained a calm presence during his first homicide scene. He properly secured the suspect and ensured that evidence and testimony were properly maintained and secured. Deputy Gieger’s actions in securing the crime scene, advising Deputy Andrews and maintaining control over a rapidly evolving situation were instrumental in a successful law enforcement response to the situation.
