On October 31, 2014, while making a security tour, Detention Officer Coppola blood on an inmate's foot and lying on the floor. Detention Officer Coppola immediately radioed a Code Orange and additional assistance. Detention Officer Simmerson immediately responded and entered the cell to assess the inmate.
After entering the cell, Detention Officer Simmerson determined that the inmate had attempted to commit suicide. As the Zone Supervisor, Sergeant Hinson made several decisions which aided in saving an inmate’s life. Due to the large amount of blood, Sergeant Hinson quickly directed the officers to remove the inmate from the cell to aid medical staff.
Detention Officers Simmerson and Coppola remove the inmate from his cell, this helped medical to better assess the inmate and provide immediate treatment which also aided in saving the inmate’s life. Each of their actions and quick thinking helped save the inmate's life.
