On December 22, Sergeant Pegues and Detention Officer Hill were assigned to the Special Needs and Inmate Management Unit. An inmate assigned to a cell in the area activated an emergency call button. Officer Hill responded and found the inmate sliding down the cell door holding his throat in the universal sign of choking. Officer Hill immediately called for help.
Sergeant Pegues grabbed the inmate and lifted him up while Officer Hill began abdominal thrusts. The Charge Nurse arrived and directed them to continue adnominal thrusts. Sergeant Pegues began another set of abdominal thrusts until the inmate’s obstruction was cleared and he was able to breathe on his own.
Sergeant Pegues and Officer Hill’s quick actions prevented further harm or death to the inmate. Sergeant Pegues and Detention Officer Hill are valued members of the law enforcement profession and Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
