On August 12, Deputy McGuire was working Mental Health Treatment Court during a defendant's case for Assault on a Government Official. The female defendant would not speak to the Judge or acknowledge anyone was speaking to her. Mental health personnel requested from the Judge to privately speak with the defendant to help diffuse the situation. Deputy McGuire provided security outside of the room while a counselor tried to foster cooperation.

The counselor returned and advised the defendant would not cooperate. Daymark previously administered treatment and medication to her, but the counselor had noticed indications the defendant was not taking prescribed medication. Due to the defendants state an Involuntary Commitment Order was pursued.

Deputy McGuire built rapport with the defendant while the order was being processed. She began smiling and nodding at Deputy McGuire, opening a line of communication. Deputy McGuire’s assistance and perseverance calmed the defendant, which avoided a potential physical threat to all involved. He went above and beyond his duties to resolve a situation without incident. Deputy McGuire has worked at the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office for eighteen years. He is currently assigned to the Judicial Services Division, Court Security Section.
