On May 3, 2016, an inmate in the Eight South Housing Area cut the brachial artery in his arm in an attempt to commit suicide. Detention Officers Thompson and Bauguess immediately called for emergency medical assistance and entered the inmate’s cell. They secured the inmate in handcuffs to prevent further self harm. Detention Officers Thompson and Bauguess remained calm and used a towel located in the cell as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. Detention Officer Bauguess applied direct pressure to the cut using a roll of toilet paper.
The inmate was transported to the hospital via EMS where he was treated and returned to the Detention Center. If it had not been for the quick thinking and prompt response of Detention Officers Thompson and Bauguess, the inmate would have died within a very short amount of time. Both officers are assets to the Office of the Sheriff and examples of selfless dedication in the performance of their duties by ensuring the security of the facility and the safety of their fellow officers and inmates alike are maintained.
