On July 19th, 2017, Deputy Birch was traveling on Main Street in Winston-Salem when he observed an overturned vehicle near the intersection of Main Street and Hilton Street. Deputy Birch observed an older male trapped in the vehicle. Deputy Birch worked with bystanders in an attempt to extract the man from the vehicle. Deputy Birch also stood by and assisted Fire and EMS workers with the entrapment victim.

Deputy Birch worked diligently to assist an endangered citizen in distress and exhausted all avenues available to him to save the life of the individual. His actions are at the heart of Law Enforcement operations everywhere honoring the motto "To Serve and Protect".
