On August 17, 2021, Deputy Welch was assigned to transport a mental respondent from a hospital in Raleigh back to a homeless shelter in Winston-Salem. Prior to arriving at the homeless shelter, Deputy Welch was advised there were no beds available due to the inclement weather (tornado/severe rain). Deputy Welch attempted to take the respondent to another shelter for veterans but was met with the same opposition. The respondent told Deputy Welch to just take him to a bridge and let him stay under there. Due to his caring nature, Deputy Welch drove him to a motel and payed for a room out his own pocket so he could have a safe, dry place to stay for the night. Deputy Welch’s compassion epitomizes the values of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in providing assistance and ensuring the well-being of the community in which it serves.
