Deputy J. McDowell: On May 20, 2024, Deputy J. McDowell demonstrated exceptional investigative skills and dedication to duty during an incident at the Clemmons Ulta Beauty store. Through meticulous investigation, Deputy McDowell uncovered a significant retail theft ring operating out of Fayetteville, targeting Ulta cosmetics retailers. His efforts led to the recovery of 163 stolen items valued at $5,491.94, which were successfully returned to Ulta Beauty. This recovery represented not only a major win for the store but also a significant disruption to the criminal enterprise involved. In addition to the returned items, Deputy McDowell discovered other stolen cosmetics from various unknown locations worth several thousand dollars, indicating the extensive reach of the theft ring. Deputy McDowell seized cell phones from the suspects, searching for crucial evidence to help solve additional cases. This technological investigation provided valuable insights into the suspects' operations and connections.
A critical breakthrough in the investigation was the identification of one suspect's use of a false identity, uncovering other charges from different jurisdictions, and warrants for her arrest. This corrected identification has opened new avenues for further inquiry and potential additional charges. Deputy McDowell’s relentless pursuit and detailed investigative work significantly impacted the community's safety and security. His efforts dismantled a widespread theft ring, resulting in the recovery of substantial stolen goods and the exposure of a suspect's false identity, thereby aiding in the administration of justice. Deputies C. Bartlett, T. Justice, and K-9 Hondo: On May 13, 2024, Deputies C. Bartlett, T. Justice, and K-9 Hondo executed a vehicle check operation at Glenn High School's student parking lot. K-9 Hondo alerted the deputies to a passenger car owned by a student. Upon the student’s refusal to comply with school staff’s requests, both deputies began searching for him. Unable to locate the student initially, Deputies Bartlett and Justice searched the alerted vehicle and discovered a 9mm handgun, ammunition, and a replica BB gun. After securing these dangerous items, they received information that the student had been spotted at the bus lot. Responding promptly, the deputies located the student, who then fled on foot. Demonstrating quick decision-making and physical endurance, the deputies gave chase and successfully apprehended the student. The student was subsequently transported to the Magistrate's Office and charged with several offenses. The decisive actions of Deputies Bartlett, Justice, and K-9 Hondo directly resulted in the removal of a dangerous weapon from Glenn High School, thereby significantly enhancing the safety and security of the campus community. Their actions not only safeguarded the students and staff of Glenn High School but also underscored their commitment to public safety.
Corporal R. Rae and K-9 Mickey: On May 22, 2024, Cpl. R. Rae and K-9 Mickey responded to an urgent call for assistance from the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD). An armed suspect, actively shooting a pistol on Waughtown Street in Winston-Salem, had fled on foot when challenged by a WSPD officer. The suspect posed a significant threat as he ran through a densely populated area with high vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Corporal Rae and K-9 Mickey responded and deployed at the last known location where the suspect was seen running, still armed with the pistol. Demonstrating exceptional teamwork and tracking skills, Corporal Rae and K-9 Mickey ran a successful track across multiple blocks and yards. The suspect was found hiding in thick brush in a residential backyard. Upon contact, Corporal Rae, with K-9 Mickey’s assistance, challenged the suspect which led to a peaceful surrender. The effective and professional response by Corporal Rae and K-9 Mickey directly contributed to the apprehension of an armed suspect, removing a potentially deadly threat from the community. Their actions not only safeguarded the lives of the citizens in the area but also showcased the critical role and effectiveness of the K-9 unit in law enforcement operations.
